New York Counties
New York has 62 counties, each with its own network of town and city clerks who issue marriage licenses and maintain marriage records. The clerk who issued the original license keeps a copy of the certificate on file. The New York State Department of Health also holds copies of marriage records from 1881 to the present for all areas outside New York City. Five of these counties make up the boroughs of New York City, where the City Clerk handles marriage records instead of individual town clerks. Select a county below to find local contact details, fees, and resources for marriage records in that area.
